Shaw

Shaw is where Art All Night began in DC in 2011, and remains the home of the largest number of artists and venues presented annually as part of the festival. This year’s theme is #ShawGlows, which will be reflected in a large number of installations and interactive events using neon, black light, and other lighting effects. Highlights include two parades, do-it-yourself art, fashion shows, dance parties, new murals, and free glow-in-the-dark giveaways. Come Bask in the Glow.

FREE Transportation

Two U Street Parking shuttle routes will operate during the hours of 7:00 PM-3:00 AM. The North Route will operate between the Inclusive Innovation Incubator (In3), 2301 Georgia Avenue, NW and the Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Library, 1630 7th Street, NW, with stops along 7th and 9th Streets and Georgia Avenue.  The South Route will operate between between Touchstone Gallery, 901 New York Avenue, NW and Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Library, 1630 7th Street, NW, with stops along 7th and 9th Streets.

 DESCRIPTION: The outdoor Art Market at Art All Night in Shaw showcases work by over two dozen DC artists available for purchase during the festival. In addition to the featured artists, live performances, including music, dance, and fire performers, three-story-tall video projections, and artists creating work on site make this one of the biggest attractions citywide. DESCRIPTION: Kelly Towles is one of DC’s best known muralists. He has previously created two Art All Night murals on this wall and designed the “Lady in the Moon” which appeared on the Art All Night DC poster in 2016. See this new addition to Shaw’s collection of public art illuminated for its debut during this year’s festival.

ART ON DISPLAY: New sculptures.

 

DESCRIPTION: Craig Kraft’s neon sculpture in front of the Watha T. Daniel/Shaw library and at Downtown Silver Spring are neighborhood icons. Come see Kraft’s latest work, inspired by some of man’s earliest marks and Kraft’s travels to Africa. Enjoy a black light-illuminated fashion show and a DJ driven all night glow-in-the-dark dance party.

DESCRIPTION: Los Gallos Negros are a Washington, DC-based collective of musicians dedicated to the preservation and promotion Mexican and Latin American music and culture, performing in styles ranging from rural son jarocho to urban mariachi styles and contemporary Caribbean rhythms. Los Gallos have performed at the White House, Congressional receptions, and Smithsonian museums.

Ghana in DC—Atsu Numadzi & Musah Swallah

ART ON DISPLAY: Painting by Atsu Numadzi and mixed media paintings by Musah Swallah
DESCRIPTION: Atsu (a-chu) Numadzi is Ghanaian artist and fashion designer based in the Washington, DC area. His art includes paintings, collages, and mosaics depicting contemporary African life, in both rural and urban Africa. His fashions are contemporary African designs made with African prints from West and East Africa. Musah Swallah is a Ghanaian artist living in the Edgewood neighborhood of DC. Swallah creates mixed media painting using various mediums including wood, canvas and glass. His primary canvas includes narrow wooden planks, which he fuses together to create a canvas.  Numadzi and Sweallah’s work wil be on display at Calabash Tea House & Café and for sale at the Art All Night in Shaw Art Market. Swallah will also present Ghanaian artifacts, clothing, music, and cloth at the Art All Night in Shaw Art Market. DJ Amen Ra spent his childhood in Egypt & Cyprus. Having spent most of his professional career performing across the US & Globe, DJ Amen Ra has produced award winning visual and auditory content, as well as worked with brands such as Rock the Vote, MGM Casinos and Apple Music.

DESCRIPTION: The Walter E. Washington Convention Center art collection is the best kept secret in the nation’s
capital. In addition to being a state-of-the-art Convention Center, the building is home to one of the largest
public art collections in Washington, DC outside of any DC museum. One highlight is Sol LeWitt's Wall Drawing
#1103, encompassing a 2-story staircase. Another is the Shaw Wall, a 72’ wall of dynamic artwork that honors
and celebrates the Shaw community, the neighborhood that is home to the Convention Center. The tour is free
of charge, but RSVPs are required. Spaces are limited. RSVP by sending an email to community@eventsdc.com.
This tour will be led by Convention Center collection curator Robin Moore.
